Treating gynecological infections

Infections are one of the commonest reasons women come in. They may be bacterial, viral, fungal or protozoal. Left untreated they lead to chronic inflammation, fertility problems and complications in pregnancy.

Testing here is thorough and treatment is chosen for your case. PCR, culture and microscopy are used to identify exactly what is causing the problem.

What is treated

Sexually transmitted infections

Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, mycoplasma, ureaplasma, genital herpes, HPV.

Discharge Itching Burning Pain

Candidiasis (thrush)

A yeast infection caused by Candida, common after antibiotics or when immunity is low.

Thick white discharge Itching Redness

Bacterial vaginosis

An imbalance of the vaginal flora, with opportunistic bacteria taking over.

A fishy smell Grey discharge Discomfort

Inflammatory conditions

Vaginitis, cervicitis, endometritis, adnexitis — inflammation in different parts of the reproductive tract.

Pain low in the abdomen Fever Discharge

When to come in

Book an appointment if you notice any of these:

Unusual discharge — a change in colour, smell or texture
Itching or burning
Pain or discomfort passing urine
Pain low in the abdomen or in the lower back
An unpleasant smell
Bleeding between periods
Discomfort or pain during sex
Spots or sores in the genital area

Important

Many infections cause no symptoms at all, or almost none. Testing is worth doing when you change partner, when you are planning a pregnancy, and whenever you are unsure.

How it is diagnosed

Vaginal swab

A quick look at the flora

PCR testing

Detecting the DNA of the organism

Culture

Finding which antibiotics will work

Blood tests

Antibodies to specific infections

How treatment works

Consultation and examination

Your history is taken, symptoms discussed, an examination done and the necessary samples collected.

Results

PCR takes up to 10 days, culture 5–7. The results are read together and the organism identified.

Prescribing

A regimen chosen for the organism, where it is, and what it is sensitive to.

The course

Take the medication exactly as prescribed. Where needed your partner is treated too, so the infection does not come straight back.

Tests of cure

Two to four weeks after the course ends, repeat tests confirm the infection has cleared.

FAQ

Common questions about infections

Most bacterial infections — chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis, mycoplasma — clear completely with antibiotics. Viral ones, herpes and HPV, become latent: the virus stays in the body but causes nothing while immunity holds. Finish the whole course and have the follow-up tests.

Yes — with a sexually transmitted infection, always, even with no symptoms on their side. Otherwise you will simply be reinfected. During treatment either abstain or use condoms.

Symptoms usually ease within two to three days. The full course runs 7–14 days depending on the infection. Finish it even if you feel better sooner — stopping early is how infections come back.

Recurrences follow lowered immunity, courses of antibiotics, stress, hormonal change and over-washing. Cotton underwear, no douching and probiotics after antibiotics all help keep it away.
