What a breast ultrasound is

A breast ultrasound examines the breast tissue with sound waves. It shows the structure of the breast, finds lumps such as cysts and tumours, and checks the lymph nodes. Unlike mammography it uses no X-rays and is entirely safe.

Ultrasound is especially useful in women under 40, whose breast tissue is dense and where mammography is less effective. After 40 it usually complements mammography rather than replacing it.

How the scan goes

1

Getting ready

You undress to the waist and lie on the couch, hands behind your head so the whole breast is reachable.

2

The scan

Gel is applied and the probe is moved over the breast. Both breasts and both armpits are examined.

3

The result

You hear what was found straight away, and you leave with a written report and images.

Ultrasound or mammography?

The two complement each other. Which comes first depends on your age and how dense the tissue is.

Under 40

Dense breast tissue

Ultrasound is the main method

It sees through dense tissue better

Mammography only when indicated

When something suspicious turns up

Over 40

More fatty tissue

Mammography is the main method

Screening every two years

Ultrasound in addition

For dense tissue, or to clarify a finding

When in the cycle to have it

The best days

Best time: days 5–12 of the cycle (the first half, just after your period).

On those days the tissue is less dense and less swollen, so lumps show up more clearly. In the second half of the cycle the breast can be tender and the picture less sharp.

When not to wait

On any day of the cycle, if you have:

  • A new lump
  • A change in the shape or size of a breast
  • A nipple that has pulled inwards
  • Blood-stained discharge from the nipple
  • Redness or swelling of the skin

FAQ

Common questions

Once a year as a precaution. If you have cysts or fibroadenomas, follow-up may be every 3–6 months. If something new appears, come at any time.

Yes, completely. Ultrasound affects neither the baby nor your milk. Breast tissue does change in pregnancy and while feeding, but it can still be assessed properly.

No — they are different tools that work together. Under 40, with dense tissue, ultrasound tells you more. Over 40, mammography becomes the main screening test and ultrasound is used to clarify findings or when the tissue is dense.

No. The probe simply moves over the skin with gel. You may feel light pressure, nothing more. If your breasts are tender before your period, come on days 5–12 of the cycle instead.

Most breast lumps are benign — cysts and fibroadenomas. You will be told exactly what was seen and what follows: watchful follow-up, further tests such as mammography, MRI or biopsy, or a referral to a breast specialist.
