Breast ultrasound in Warsaw
A breast ultrasound at my practice in Warsaw costs 250 zł (490 zł with an examination and consultation). Both breasts and the armpit lymph nodes are scanned, and the report with a BI-RADS category is yours the same day. This site is in English, but appointments are not held in English — bring someone who can interpret, or tell me in advance and we will find a way.
What a breast ultrasound is
A breast ultrasound examines the breast tissue with sound waves. It shows the structure of the breast, finds lumps such as cysts and tumours, and checks the lymph nodes. Unlike mammography it uses no X-rays and is entirely safe.
Ultrasound is especially useful in women under 40, whose breast tissue is dense and where mammography is less effective. From 40–45 it complements mammography rather than replacing it: European guidelines recommend screening mammography between 45 and 74.

What it can find
Cysts
Fluid-filled sacs. Usually no treatment is needed, only follow-up.
Fibroadenoma
A firm lump, most common in younger women. Either watched or removed.
Fibrocystic changes
Benign, lumpy or tender breast tissue. Usually only follow-up is needed.
Duct ectasia
Widened ducts, sometimes with discharge.
Enlarged lymph nodes
Assessment of the nodes in the armpit.
Suspicious lesions
These need further tests — a biopsy or mammography.
How the scan goes
Getting ready
You undress to the waist and lie on the couch, hands behind your head so the whole breast is reachable.
The scan
Gel is applied and the probe is moved over the breast. Both breasts and both armpits are examined.
The result
You hear what was found straight away, and you leave with a written report and images.
Ultrasound or mammography?
The two complement each other. Which comes first depends on your age and how dense the tissue is.

The best days
Best time: days 5–12 of the cycle (the first half, just after your period).
On those days the tissue is less dense and less swollen, so lumps show up more clearly. In the second half of the cycle the breast can be tender and the picture less sharp.
When not to wait
On any day of the cycle, if you have:
- A new lump
- A change in the shape or size of a breast
- A nipple that has pulled inwards
- Blood-stained discharge from the nipple
- Redness or swelling of the skin
