Pregnancy ultrasound in Warsaw
An early scan at 5–10 weeks is the first time you see your baby. It confirms the pregnancy, shows the heartbeat and rules out an ectopic. You hear the result and what it means as soon as the scan ends.
Scanning early, at 5–10 weeks
The first scan matters. At 5–6 weeks the gestational sac is already visible in the uterus, and from 6–7 weeks so is the heartbeat. This scan confirms the pregnancy and rules out an ectopic one.
What is visible week by week
Every week brings something new. Here is what an early scan shows at each stage:
Week 5
The gestational sac in the uterus, 3–5 mm — confirmation that the pregnancy is in the right place.
Week 6
The embryo, 2–4 mm, and a heartbeat.
Week 7
The embryo is 8–11 mm. The head is visible. The heart beats at 120–160 a minute.
Week 8
The embryo is 14–18 mm. Arm and leg buds appear.
Week 9
20–25 mm. It begins to move, though you cannot feel it yet.
Week 10
30–40 mm. All the organs have formed. It already looks like a baby.

How the scan goes
Getting ready
Early on the scan is usually transvaginal, with the probe placed in the vagina. It is painless and shows far more. The bladder should be empty.
The scan
The uterus is examined, the sac located, the embryo measured and the heartbeat checked. You watch it on the screen and hear what is happening.
The result
Straight afterwards you hear what was found and can ask anything. You leave with a report and, if the stage allows, a picture.
Worth knowing
The best time for a first scan
Weeks 6–7 are the ideal time. By then the sac, the embryo and the heartbeat are all reliably visible. Earlier, at five weeks, the embryo may not be seen at all — which causes worry for no reason.
When not to wait
Do not wait for the “ideal” week if you have bleeding or pain low in the abdomen, if you have had an ectopic pregnancy before, or if this is an IVF pregnancy. In those cases the scan is done as early as possible.
Is it safe
Ultrasound is entirely safe for both of you. In more than fifty years of use no harmful effect has been found. It can be repeated as often as there is a medical reason to.

A tip
There is no need to rush in the moment the test turns positive. Wait until 6–7 weeks from the first day of your last period: the heartbeat will be there, and you will be spared an anxious wait.
