Many women fear visiting a gynecologist due to the potential pain of procedures. In this article, we will discuss the common manipulations performed during a gynecological consultation, what to expect, and how painful these procedures are.
The most common procedure performed during a gynecological examination is the cervical exam with a speculum and taking a cytology sample. This procedure involves inserting a speculum into the vagina, which can cause some discomfort, especially if the speculum is not the right size. However, the cytology test itself is not painful. It lasts just a few minutes and helps the doctor evaluate the condition of the cervix.
Colposcopy is a cervical exam using a microscope after applying special solutions (acetic acid and Lugol’s solution). This procedure helps detect pathological changes. While the solution application may cause slight stinging, the procedure itself is painless and lasts about 10 minutes. The main discomfort comes from the speculum inside the vagina.
A cervical biopsy is a diagnostic procedure performed if there are suspicious areas on the cervix. It is done using different methods depending on the technique. For some women, it may be slightly painful, but local anesthesia can be used if necessary. The procedure is quick and does not cause prolonged discomfort.
Excision or conization of the cervix are therapeutic procedures performed to remove pathological areas of the cervix. Anesthesia can be local or general, depending on the complexity of the procedure. These manipulations take no more than 15 minutes and do not cause long-lasting pain. After the procedure, the patient can return to normal activities.
There’s no reason to fear visiting a gynecologist. If the doctor insists on performing a procedure, it’s necessary to confirm a diagnosis or rule out serious health issues. It’s very important to inform the doctor about your pain threshold so they can provide appropriate pain relief if needed. Try to stay calm — the less stressed you are, the easier the procedures will be.
Regular visits to the gynecologist are an essential part of women’s health care. Pain and discomfort can be minimized with proper preparation and trust in your doctor. Don’t be afraid to visit your gynecologist, undergo necessary examinations, and enjoy a healthy and fulfilling life.
