Which Cytology to Choose: Liquid or Glass Cytology?

Cytological examination of the cervix is an essential part of preventive care for diseases like cervical cancer. However, there are several methods for conducting this test, and one of the most common questions from patients is which method to choose: liquid cytology or glass cytology?

Glass Cytology

This method is standard and traditional. During sample collection, the doctor uses a special brush to collect material from the external part of the cervix and the cervical canal. The material is then smeared on a glass slide, labeled with the patient's initials, and sent to the laboratory for further analysis.

However, this method has some drawbacks, as some material may remain on the brush, leading to sample loss. Additionally, this method does not allow for simultaneous testing for other infections, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Liquid Cytology

Liquid cytology is a more modern and precise method. For this test, a specialized brush with teeth is used to collect samples from both the external part of the cervix and the cervical canal. The brush is then immersed in a special solution that preserves all of the material.

This method has numerous advantages:

  • No sample loss;
  • Allows for additional analysis of human papillomavirus (HPV) and other infections;
  • Results are more accurate due to better preservation of cells.

Advantages of Liquid Cytology

  • The most accurate diagnostic method;
  • Ability to perform additional tests for sexually transmitted infections;
  • Reduced risk of false results due to better cell preservation.

Which Method to Choose?

Although both methods have their advantages, liquid cytology is the gold standard for diagnosing cervical diseases, including cancer. As a physician, I recommend choosing liquid cytology, as this method not only provides more accurate results but also allows for additional tests without any loss of material.
