Hello! Today we will discuss an important question: Do you need to undergo a gynecological examination in the speculum if you regularly have vaginal ultrasound?
Yes, a gynecological examination is essential, even when performing vaginal ultrasound regularly. The reason is that vaginal ultrasound does not replace the need for a speculum examination. Let me explain why.
During ultrasound, we cannot visualize the external part of the cervix, due to the technical limitations of the ultrasound probe. When the probe is inserted into the vagina, it makes contact with the cervix, but its capabilities are limited, and the outer part of the cervix remains invisible.
To detect pathology in the cervix via ultrasound, the process must already be well advanced. For example, this might be an oncological disease that has spread to the entire cervix and surrounding tissues.
However, to prevent such processes, regular speculum examinations of the cervix are necessary, and cytological smears as well as tests for human papillomavirus (HPV) should be taken.
Only during this examination can the doctor visualize changes on the cervix, diagnose them in time, and administer the necessary treatment. This is crucial for early detection of conditions that are not visible during ultrasound at the initial stages.
Therefore, despite regular vaginal ultrasounds, the gynecological examination in the speculum remains an essential part of cervical disease diagnosis. Don’t neglect regular examinations for your health!
